Texas State Championship 2008

2008 State Champions

Senior midfielder Johnny McKnight scored four goals as Highland Park defeated Episcopal School of Dallas, 9-3, in the Texas High School Lacrosse League Division I state championship on Sunday.

Junior attackman Kevin Fritts chipped in three goals for Highland Park, which also won state lacrosse titles in 2004 and '05.

ESD, which scored two of its goals in the final four minutes, was the defending state champion.

Highland Park (17-3) won its final 11 games of the season, including the North District championship over ESD last weekend.

"It was a total team effort all year," Highland Park coach Derek Thompson said.

McKnight, who on Saturday scored five goals in a semifinal win over Austin, was named MVP of the state tournament. He is a North District all-state selection and an All-American nominee.

Highland Park sophomore goalie Jordan Lee made 14 saves Sunday and was named the Defensive MVP of the state tournament.

Junior attackman Will Ziegler and senior attackman Travis Gallivan scored Highland Park's other goals.

Briefly: Highland Park II won the Division II championship, beating Houston Cy-Fair, 17-10. Junior attackman Blake Lafitte was named offensive MVP in Div. II, and sophomore defenseman B.G. Yarto was named defensive MVP. ... Hockaday won the Div. I girls title, beating Houston St. John's, 13-12, in overtime.

The Highland Park Boys Lacrosse Club funded the recent installation of more than 200 yards of safety wall padding at Highlander Stadium. The padding clads the stadium walls on the home and visitor sides of the field and will provide an extra measure of safety for all athletes competing at the facility.

The HP boys lacrosse club has competed in Highlander Stadium for the past 10 years and has won four Texas high school state championships during that time.

Highland Park Boys Lacrosse, Inc. is a non profit 501 (c) 3 governed by a volunteer board. The Highland Park lacrosse team was founded in the winter of 1995 with 21 players to promote lacrosse in the community. HP was one of the first youth teams involved with what would become known as the North Texas Youth Lacrosse Association in 1998.

The HP youth program is a member program of the North Texas Lacrosse Youth Association (NTLYA). The high school program is a member of Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL). Players who do not reside in the Highland Park district will not be registered with Highland Park Boys lacrosse.

Former HP lacrosse players have played in college programs such as Duke, Denver, Villanova, Hofstra, Denison, Whittier, St. Joseph, Washington & Lee, Hampden-Sydney, Lynchburg, and Swarthmore.

Members of Highland Park’s Division I lacrosse team pile on top of one another Sunday as they celebrate winning the state championship with a 9-3 victory over ESD. The Scots’ Division II team also won state.
FRIENDSWOOD – The Highland Park Scots are once again kings of the Texas high school lacrosse world.

Times two.

HP won both the Division I and Division II state championships on Sunday at Henry Winston Stadium to become the first school in Texas’ lacrosse history to win both titles in the same year. Both went through defending state champions to pull off the feat.

The Division I team rolled past the Episcopal School of Dallas, 9-3, while the Division II team took out Cypress-Fairbanks, 17-11. Both Scots teams were the top seeds entering the tournament.

Senior midfielder Johnny McKnight led the way for the D-I team with four goals in the championship game. McKnight was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player just moments after learning he was also named an All-American.

“It’s been a really good day,” McKnight said after the title game. McKnight also scored five goals in the Scots’ 12-3 semifinal victory over Austin High on Saturday. “We just came out as a team and played really well today. We came in pretty confident.”

Sophomore goalie Jordan Lee was named Defensive MVP after a brilliant performance against ESD, holding the Eagles to just one goal until the 3:06 mark of the fourth quarter. Kevin Fritts’ hat trick in the championship game for HP earned him the Offensive MVP award.

“Jordan Lee made some spectacular saves,” McKnight said. “We were pumped up watching him. Our defense just played ridiculously amazing. It was a lot of fun seeing that.”

The Scots (16-2) also beat ESD, 10-5, two weeks ago in the North District championship game. ESD won the teams’ regular-season meeting, 12-10.

“They played great defense,” ESD head coach Kevin Barnicle said. “Their goalie had an outstanding game. He’s a great goalie. We didn’t shoot well enough to beat them. We knew going into this we didn’t score more than five against them last week, so we were going to have to work hard to get shots. We got a lot of good opportunities, but we couldn’t capitalize on them.”

Highland Park coach Derek Thompson, left, displays the state trophy with team captains Johnny McKnight (11), Travis Gallivan (32), and Brett Martin (21).
ESD (16-5) has now played in four straight state championship games, a string that began with the Scots beating the Eagles, 7-6, in the 2005 title game for HP’s second state title.

“I’m very proud of the kids,” HP D-I coach Derek Thomson said. “We played a very challenging schedule. Every time, they rose to the challenge of the competition. We continued to improve during the year. I couldn’t be any happier.”

The D-II team never trailed in its 10-8 win over Cedar Park in Saturday’s semifinal. However, the championship game was extremely close until the Scots blew things wide open with nine unanswered goals after the Ironmen tied the game, 8-8, early in the third quarter.

The contest was a rematch of last year’s title game in which Cy-Fair beat Highland Park, 18-13, in the Scots’ D-II program’s first trip to state.

“We’ve waited 12 months for this moment, and we couldn’t have asked for anything better,” HP D-II coach Ross Thomson said.

Ross Thomson said the turning point in the title game came when Parker Brown was whistled for a three-minute, un-releasable stick penalty with 1:14 left in the first half. Cy-Fair tied the game with the Scots still short-handed.

“I took them into the locker room and said, ‘You’ve got to react to this,” Ross Thomson said. “You’ve got to have the biggest movement we’ve had all year long, in terms of our enthusiasm and our energy. You’ve got to kill this penalty, and once it’s killed there’s an onslaught that’s going to come they’re not going to be prepared for.’ And that’s exactly what happened. I’m very proud of them.”

HP’s Blake Lafitte was named the D-II Offensive MVP, while teammate B.G. Yarto was named Defensive MVP. Cy-Fair’s Travis Tabb won the overall MVP award. The loss was the first of the season for the Ironmen.

Highland Park Players Honored With Awards

Senior Murtha wins Commissioners’ Award

By Chuck Cox
Park Cities People Sports Editor

FRIENDSWOOD — Highland Park lacrosse players not only came away with a state championship last Sunday, several of them also came back with some awards for their accomplishments this season.

In addition to Johnny McKnight being named an All-American and Most Valuable Player of the state tourney, Kevin Fritts being named Offensive MVP and Jordan Lee being named Defensive MVP, senior defensive player Jack Murtha won the league’s Commissioners’ Award.

Prior to the state tourney, McKnight, Briggs Montgomery and Ben Fuller were all named to the All-State Team. The Scots also had several representatives on the All-North District Team – Kevin Fritts, Brett Martin, Travis Gallivan, Will Ziegler, Campbell Powers, Jordan Lee, Cody Walker, Josh Francis and Jordan Vincent.

All four All-Americans came from North District schools. Joining McKnight were: Episcopal School of Dallas’ D.J. Sprenger, Alex Hardt and Cody Solaja, along with St. Mark’s’ James Blair. Arthur Brousseau of St. Mark’s also earned Academic All-American.

In Division II, HP’s Blake Lafitte was named to the All-State Team. Teammates Cole Burdette and Patrick Walter were selected to the all-district squad, while Scots Will Boeing, Charlie Foose, Chase Prospere, James Mills and Will Jennings.
