About High School DI, DII and JV Teams |
|
The Highland Park Boys Lacrosse Division I Varsity team has a proud tradition of producing state champions and collegiate players. Since Derek Thomson became head coach for the 2004 season, the HP DI Varsity team has won the THSLL State Championship four times (2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009). Many of the boys playing on those teams were recruited to play college lacrosse at the NCAA DI and DIII levels. Many more have gone on to play with Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association teams. All high school boys have the opportunity to make the DI Varsity team. However, it is our coaching staff’s belief that underclassmen are often better served and developed playing at the DII or JV levels because it is on those teams that they will get adequate playing time to maximize their potential.
In the spring of 2007, our coaches and board agreed to have our JV A team play at the Division II level. Traditionally our JV A team has been very competitive and suffered from a lack of competition at the JV level. The HP philosophy is that our DII team is a junior varsity team and a training ground for our DI future players. The DII team has won one state championship (2008) and was the state champion runner up in 2007, its first season competing at the Division II level. Our DII team is open to underclassmen and juniors. We do not permit seniors to play at the DII level.
The HP Junior Varsity team is a competitive yet developmental team. By league rules a JV team is open to underclassmen and juniors and our HP JV teams have generally been made up of underclassmen and athletes new to lacrosse. The JV team balances competitiveness with frequent line rotations.
Our eligibility policy states that a boy must live in Highland Park Independent School District to try out for and join one of our teams.
Many former HP lacrosse players have played in NCAA DI and DIII and MCLA college programs including Duke, Denver, Villanova, Hofstra, Denison, Whittier, St. Joseph, Washington & Lee, Hampden-Sydney, Lynchburg, Swarthmore, SMU and TCU.
Coach Derek Thomson was named head Varsity coach in the fall of 2003. In 2004 our Varsity team won its first of three THSLL DI state championships. Our second state title came in 2005, when the Varsity team went 17-0. Our third state title was in 2008 when the DI Varsity defeated ESD. In 2009, the Scots won their fourth state title and became and the first team in Texas to finish in the top 20 nationally. Under Coach Thomson’s tenure our Varsity team has play many of the best high school varsity teams in the country with great success. Our program has given many of boys the opportunity to play lacrosse in California, Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey to name a few. Coach Thomson is proud to have had many of his players compete on Team Texas and Team Dallas teams. |

About Youth Fall 5-6 and 7-8 Teams |
|
Registration Opens June 8 for the Fall and Spring Seasons (ends September 3)
Highland Park Boys Lacrosse Fall Youth League (5/6 grade level & 7/8 grade level): The goal and emphasis of the Youth league is primarily to develop HP players and teach basic skills and game strategies. Part of that development is competition at various levels depending on the player’s stage of individual development. Winning games is not the primary goal at this level, but will occur as a result of proper skill and game strategy development.
The HP Lacrosse Youth Fall 2010 season will consist of a minimum of nine Sunday practices in September/October and two tournaments in October/November.
Players will be divided up into practice teams and stay with their group for each practice during the fall. During each Sunday practice, the HP Youth Lacrosse coaching staff will focus on skill development and situational/game strategy for the first half of the practice; and then hold intra-squad practice games against another practice team to incorporate the training in a live game situation for the last half of the practice time.
During ALL fall practices, players will be evaluated by the HP Lacrosse coaching staff for team formation for the end of season tournaments. Based on fall performance, players will be placed on Championship and Competitive (A&B) level teams for participation in the end of season tournaments.
Dates & Time: Each Sunday starting September 12 through November 14 (see practice times below); Halloween Shootout tournament October 30-31 (Eastfield College, Mesquite) and the Lonestar Shootout (High Point Park, Plano) November 20-21.

Registration Opens on June 8 for Fall and Spring; space is limited. When full, a waitlist will begin. Registration Closes on September 3. All players must reside in the HPISD. Players in the HPISD not attending an HPISD school, may play on an HP Lacrosse Team only if their school does not have a program for their grade.
Highland Park Boys Lacrosse Fall Bantam League (1/2 grade level and 3/4 grade level):
The goal and emphasis of the Bantam league is fun and development, not winning. Games are played using a modified format and scores are NOT kept. In the Bantam league, coaches introduce young HP boys to the game of lacrosse in hopes that they enjoy it and stick with it!
The HP Lacrosse Bantam fall 2010 season will consist of 6 weeks of games played on either a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in September/October.
PLEASE NOTE: 1/2 players are grouped on teams by school to the best of our ability depending on the numbers; 3/4 teams are not formed according to school so players will be grouped with other players in the HPISD to help prepare them for youth lacrosse. Teams will change each fall and spring season.
During the September 11 & 12 weekend our bantam coaches host a skills clinic where they teach the boys the basics of lacrosse and evaluate their ability. Following the skills clinic teams will be formed. You will be notified of your team assignment, game, and practice schedule following the skills clinic. You may play other teams from HP or teams from neighboring communities as well.
Newcomers Clinic - August 22
Games – September 25/26 through early November: 1st and 2nd grade level games, Saturdays or Sundays 3rd and 4th grade level games, Saturdays or Sundays
Location: All games and leveling session to be held at McCullough Middle School (click for directions). Practice locations are TBD after team assignments.
