About High School DI, DII and JV Teams |
|
The Highland Park Boys Lacrosse Division I Varsity team has a proud tradition of producing state champions and collegiate players. Since Derek Thomson became head coach for the 2004 season, the HP DI Varsity team has won the THSLL State Championship four times (2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009). Many of the boys playing on those teams were recruited to play college lacrosse at the NCAA DI and DIII levels. Many more have gone on to play with Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association teams. All high school boys have the opportunity to make the DI Varsity team. However, it is our coaching staff’s belief that underclassmen are often better served and developed playing at the DII or JV levels because it is on those teams that they will get adequate playing time to maximize their potential.
In the spring of 2007, our coaches and board agreed to have our JV A team play at the Division II level. Traditionally our JV A team has been very competitive and suffered from a lack of competition at the JV level. The HP philosophy is that our DII team is a junior varsity team and a training ground for our DI future players. The DII team has won one state championship (2008) and was the state champion runner up in 2007, its first season competing at the Division II level. Our DII team is open to underclassmen and juniors. We do not permit seniors to play at the DII level.
The HP Junior Varsity team is a competitive yet developmental team. By league rules a JV team is open to underclassmen and juniors and our HP JV teams have generally been made up of underclassmen and athletes new to lacrosse. The JV team balances competitiveness with frequent line rotations.
Our eligibility policy states that a boy must live in Highland Park Independent School District to try out for and join one of our teams.
Many former HP lacrosse players have played in NCAA DI and DIII and MCLA college programs including Duke, Denver, Villanova, Hofstra, Denison, Whittier, St. Joseph, Washington & Lee, Hampden-Sydney, Lynchburg, Swarthmore, SMU and TCU.
Coach Derek Thomson was named head Varsity coach in the fall of 2003. In 2004 our Varsity team won its first of three THSLL DI state championships. Our second state title came in 2005, when the Varsity team went 17-0. Our third state title was in 2008 when the DI Varsity defeated ESD. In 2009, the Scots won their fourth state title and became and the first team in Texas to finish in the top 20 nationally. Under Coach Thomson’s tenure our Varsity team has play many of the best high school varsity teams in the country with great success. Our program has given many of boys the opportunity to play lacrosse in California, Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey to name a few. Coach Thomson is proud to have had many of his players compete on Team Texas and Team Dallas teams. |
